Ontwikkelstudio Studio Liverpool verwacht voor de volgende generatie consoles en games dat de nadruk meer komt te liggen bij de connecties tussen verschillende apparaten en het internet.
Zo zegt Stuart Tilley, een van de ontwikkelaars, in een interview met Eurogamer toen hem werd gevraagd wat hij als toekomst ziet van de games industrie.
“You don’t want to switch on your console and fall out of your social sphere, and I think that’s going to become one of the big things. I think in five, ten years from now it’s going to be really challenging for anyone to do a successful game that isolates the player.”
Hij was vooral te spreken over met name SmartGlass, de nieuwe console Wii U en de cross-platform verbinding tussen de PlayStation 3 en de PlayStation Vita.
“Now that the technology’s there it’s up to us creative people to figure out what we can do with it. I’d love to be playing on the PS3 but my daughter could have the Vita and be doing stuff, and interacting in the same game world. There are definite possibilities in there, and I think developers will start taking more advantage of it in time.”
Lijkt me wel verstandig. De connectiviteit tussen de PS3 en Vita is redelijk op dit moment onder de beschikbare games. Maar op langere termijn zal dit ongetwijfeld een veel grotere rol gaan spelen. Het levert bovendien echt leuke nieuwe mogelijkheden op, waaronder cross-platform gameplay. Zie WipEout 2048 en WipEout HD.
