Het is voor niemand een geheim dat Microsoft fors inzet op Xbox Game Pass en hoewel er in eerste instantie erg veel vragen waren over de haalbaarheid en of het winstgevend zou zijn, mag er wel van een succes gesproken worden. Het aantal gebruikers is fors en Microsoft blijft de service met continue updates fris en interessant houden. Nu spreken ze ook over het model en dat is volgens Phil Spencer duurzaam.

Dit zegt de baas van Xbox in gesprek met Axios. De huidige vorm van Xbox Game Pass is op dit moment duurzaam en dit zal alleen maar toenemen. Hierbij baseert Spencer zich op het huidige aantal abonnees en de afgenomen abonnementsvormen. Om dit duurzaam te houden komen er wiskundige berekening aan te pas en die tekenen een model uit dat voor het bedrijf motiverend werkt om nog meer in te zetten op het aanbod.

“I mean, you could do the math on Game Pass. I guess you don’t know how many subscribers [we have] or how much each subscriber is paying, but you can make some fairly informed decisions and literally just do the math on what we think Game Pass could eventually be – you can do that on aby part of the business. But absolutely, Game Pass is sustainable.”

De groei van Xbox Game Pass is hierin natuurlijk een belangrijke factor, maar Spencer benadrukt wel dat het niet de enige focus is die Microsoft momenteel heeft. Game Pass zou als een standalone programma gezien kunnen worden dat Microsoft tot dusver genoeg oplevert om het voort te blijven zetten. Of in zijn woorden:

“It’s not the only thing that’s growing in Xbox. It’s not the only focus of the organisation, and it, as a standalone thing, is very sustainable as it sits today. It’s sustainable.

I know there are a lot of people that like to write [that] we’re burning cash right now for some future pot of gold at the end. No. Game Pass is very, very sustainable right now as it sits and it continues to grow.”
